Are you looking for a way to engage with the community and improve the local flora and fauna? Then the Robin Restoration Project is one should consider supporting.
Our goal is to restore the South Island Robin to the Hokonui Hills. Once upon a time this amazing little bird used to live in abundance in the Hokonui Hills. However, due to habitat loss and predators such as possums, rats, and mustelids (weasels, ferrets, and stoats), it has completely disappeared from the area.
We want to work together as a community and bring back the robin. To do this we need to improve the quality of our flora and native flora in the Hokonui Hills, so it can once again be a suitable home for the South Island Robin.
In order to reach our goal we are setting up three different programmes under the Robin Restoration Project:
Currently the only programme up and running is our Donation Programme which you can check out below:
If you want to learn more about the South Island Robin, check out the digital encyclopedia of New Zealand Birds here.

Imagine walking through Haumari (Croydon Bush) and you suddenly hear the robin’s beautiful song. The excitement you would feel to know, you helped create it!
Pest Control is a crucial part of flora and fauna restoration, we need it to make the Hokonui Hills a safe home for the South Island Robin. We are looking for community volunteers to help in the field with our trapping program. This would essentially mean you get to walk amongst our native bush and check the occasional trap.
This trapping programme is designed to be flexible. It is set up so you work in a team (it can be an already existing team if this suits you better). This way you can take turns checking traps and fill in for each other if need be. We understand your time is valuable, so we have made it so you can volunteer for as little as three days a season (with no more than three hours for each trapping line).
To learn more about the programme check out its four steps below:
This programme will take 2-11 days (depending on the size of your team/ if you are doing this solo). Each session should go for no more than three hours at a time (excluding your induction which may take longer). Not only are these times all flexible, but your team is able to substitute for each other if required.
At an agreed-upon date and time, you will meet with our Health and Safety Coordinator and be given a quick run-through of the health and safety procedures. Then Lois Bishop (from the Hokonui Tramping Club) will take your team to Grants Knob in Haumari (Croydon Bush) and teach you how to use the traps and fill out the relevant forms. This is the only date that your whole team must be present and is flexible based on what suits both your team and Lois.
The first three trapping sessions completed by your team will be assisted by Lois. This is simply to ensure you are confident completing the task. We suggest breaking your team up into smaller groups and attending one of these days each, but this is entirely up to your team and how confident they feel.
After six weeks, you should be capable of trapping un-assisted. Simply pick up the gear and forms from Lois and drop them off to her once you’re finished. These times are all flexible, but your team is able to substitute for each other if required.
This sponsorship programme was set up to allow organisations and individuals alike to financially contribute to restoration in the Hokonui hills. To allow for transparency we let you choose what you want your money to go towards. Check out the different options below.

Hokonui Taiao is always in need of resources to operate its pest control programme in the Hokonui Hills. In the past, local organisations have generously donated various resources and materials to these efforts. You can check out the stories below to see who has been involved so far, and the kinds of things they have donated.
At the moment we are open to any suggestions you may have for donations. Please email us at tegan@hokonuirunanga.org.nz
