Kauapapa Taiao

Hokonui Rūnanga Kaupapa Taiao employs a team of professionals to look after and advance the rights and interest of Hokonui Rūnanga through taiao related projects and engagement. Our role is to:

  • Protect and maintain the rangatiratanga of the members of the Hokonui Rūnanga as it is defined by them in accordance with their own traditions and customs.
  • Engage in any other activity necessary for the protection and maintenance of the rights and interest of the Hokonui Runanga.
  • Take part in any formal or informal procedures which involves the use and management of resources which are under the care of Hokonui Rūnanga as mana whenua kaitiaki.
  • Promote and safeguard the amenity, health, safety, and cultural and social welfare of both tangata whenua and the wider community within the Hokonui takiwā, where it intersects with the taiao. In the context of taiao related activities, this encompasses ensuring:

       – Habitats and vegetation are restored, providing a haven for indigenous species, and supporting cultural practices
       – Mahinga kai and rongoā species flourish so that they can nourish people physically and spiritually
       – Taonga and lost species are returned and protected
       – Intergenerational knowledge is shared, strengthening tikanga and whakapapa and enabling full expression of kaitiakitanga

AWARDS

In 2021 the Kaupapa Taiao Team won the Environmental Action in Water Quality Environment Southland Community Award.

The following is from the Environment Southland website:

Hokonui Rūnanga’s environmental arm is seriously impressive. The Hokonui Rūnanga Kaupapa Taiao programme started in December 2020.

The purpose of this programme was to ensure the Rūnanga increased capacity across the Mataura catchment with a focus on Mātauranga Māori.

They identified a need to develop a specialist set of skills to support the delivery of their environmental projects and have recently

gained funding from LINZ and DOC – Jobs for Nature.
